Buntingford Bowls Club was founded early in the 20th Century - the actual date is unknown. We know it existed in 1914 and at one time had two rinks in River Green. The official founding date has been recognised as 1922 and it moved to its current premises in 1926. The land was purchased for £50 and green was laid by a few members. In the beginning, the club house was more like a garden shed. Over the next half a century, a number of "improvements" were made to allow the members room for teas. No toilets except a corrugated tin trap in the open-air for the "gentlemen".
The Ladies section was founded over 40 years ago. The Club is now fully integrated and has members ranging in age from 11 years to xx (well it would be impolite to reveal a lady's age).
In 1974, proper toilets were built and the ladies had a few square feet to change in. The gents still used the wooden shed "out back". You always made sure to kick the door before you entered and then wait 30 seconds. This gave enough time for the furry creatures to disappear.
The next 20 years saw more improvements including the building of a kitchen, extension to the bar cellar (a very important and memorable event) and the provision of a porta-kabin as the gents changing room.
In 1998 the new premises opened and is a credit to the hard work of a number of members. The modern building is one of the best in the county if not the country. It also allows social functions to be conducted in more comfort.
