On Thursday 2nd June, Buntingford Bowls Club played their first of seven ‘special’ scheduled matches to help celebrate their Centenary year when they took on a team representing ‘The Friends of English Bowling’. Club President, Mark Plume welcomed players from both sides with the furthest member of the opposition travelling all the way from Cornwall to play, which just shows what a star attraction Buntingford is to the bowling community.
A lunch was laid on for the early arrivals followed by a match that was played in glorious sunshine and good spirit with many friendships made. Post the game a 3 course meal was laid on by Roxana Clifton, Ellen Amos, Sue Batchelor and Jane Watkins. The players from both sides were also kept refreshed throughout the day by our bar staff of Ray Watkins and Greg Amos.
The Friends of English Bowling Captain, Marcia Dunstone was presented with a copy of the club's book celebrating the first 100 years, together with a memento in the form of a bowling themed paperweight as a gift for bringing her team to Buntingford. In turn the club received a framed certificate to remember the day by. For the Club Presidents Charity the generosity of members from both sides helped raise over £150 for Mencap.
It was an enjoyable and memorable way to start the centenary celebrations with the next ‘special’ match taking place on Tuesday 14th June.

20th April. Well 5 days to go until the green officially opens. A huge amount of work done has been carried out this week. We have cut twice, now down to 6.5mm with a bit more to come off Friday and Saturday mornings taking it to about 5mm. The green has also been sarrol rolled, verti-cut, taking out about 8 more bags of thatch and drag matted twice. I must admit it is looking in excellent condition. Unfortunately, we are still awaiting the return of our ‘lead’ mower which has been waiting parts, so we have been cutting with the back up mower, which although is ok, doesn’t give as good a finish. We are hoping to have our number 1 mower back shortly, famous last words!
We hope you enjoy the green, we hope to cut 3/4 times a week from Monday but this may not always be possible as both Bryan and I have child care issues, hence, WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR CUTTERS FOR WEDNESDAYS and FRIDAYS. If there are no volunteers, this may effect the amount of cuts the green has and therefore effect your bowling.

01.4.22 - We are very excited to announce that we've developed something revolutionary in bowling equipment - adjustable bias bowls! Guaranteed to correct your line every time and hopefully end up closer to the jack. Huge thank you to John Godman and his team for working tirelessly on this project for a couple of years... we are very pleased with the results and can't wait to take them to the green when the season starts at the end of the month. 28.2.22 - Green update. Work has continued on the green throughout the winter on many cold, damp days. There has been daily swishing (thanks to Terry, Paul, Tony, Ross, Tom and Martin), cutting, verti cutting, sarrol rolling, aerating and many treatments, in readiness for the fast approaching season. Today, with the help of Vic, we verti cut, cut and sarrol rolled the green. 6 bags of thatch was removed, this following the removal of many more bags throughout the winter. The green is looking in far better condition compared to this time last year. Although we have some moss (you will see blackened areas on the green where we have treated it), there is nowhere near as much as 2021. We will be again treating the moss and giving the green a feed on Wednesday. The green is currently being cut at 9mm with the intention of slowly reducing the height of the cut to about 4mm come green opening time. Last week, I actually put some bowls up, bearing in mind the length of the grass, I put my first bowl in the ditch, showing the verti cutting to quicken up the green, is indeed working.
A gentle reminder, we are still looking for helpers to cut the green during the season on Wednesday and Friday mornings.

11.02.22 - Unfortunately Bunty lost in the final at Potters. The other team were very strong favourites to win but our team played incredibly well. We got 5 teams through to the last 16 and 2 teams through to quarter final. Bunty did very well overall, a great week.
10.02.22 - We have a team through to the final at Potters tomorrow. They have a combined age of 357 - George & Pam Swaby, Len Purdy & Charles Oates. Good luck to the team! They are absolutely worn out after 3 games today. The final is at 9:20 tomorrow morning.
